Climb Mount Kilimanjaro

5,895 m — the roof of Africa, on foot

Summit altitude
5,895 m at Uhuru Peak
Recommended duration
7 – 8 days on the mountain
Success rate
≈ 90% (7 days) to 95% (8 days)
Technical skill needed
None — it is a high-altitude trek

Kilimanjaro is the world's highest free-standing mountain and the only 5,000 m peak most people can reach without mountaineering skills. Success is almost entirely about time on the mountain: seven days gives you roughly 90% odds, eight days about 95%, and the cheap five-day options far less. We run Machame, Lemosho, Rongai and Marangu with KPAP-standard crews, emergency oxygen and twice-daily oxygen-saturation checks.

Choosing your route

Lemosho in eight days is our top recommendation for success rate and scenery. Machame in seven days is the best-value classic. Rongai approaches from the drier northern side and suits the rainy months, and Marangu is the only hut-based route but has the weakest acclimatisation profile.

Altitude and acclimatisation

We walk 'pole pole' — deliberately slowly — and build in climb-high, sleep-low days such as Lava Tower. Guides record your pulse and oxygen saturation every morning and evening, and carry bottled oxygen and a stretcher for descent, not for summiting.

Fitness and preparation

Aim for three months of hill walking with a loaded daypack, plus some long back-to-back days. Summit night is 6 – 8 hours of steady uphill in the cold, so mental preparation matters as much as your legs.

Our crew standards

Fair wages paid in front of a witness, a 20 kg load limit per porter, three hot meals a day for the crew, proper sleeping tents and cold-weather gear. Ethical porter treatment is not an upgrade — it is how the mountain should be climbed.
