Stone Town, coral reefs and white sand
Zanzibar sits an hour's flight from the Serengeti and a world away in mood. Stone Town's coral-rag alleys carry Swahili, Omani, Indian and Portuguese layers of history, while the coast splits into distinct characters: Nungwi and Kendwa for swimming and nightlife, Paje and Jambiani for kitesurfing, Matemwe for reef access and Michamvi for quiet luxury. Pemba and Mafia offer serious diving with far fewer visitors.
North-east and north coasts give reliable deep water at all tides. The east coast has spectacular sand but the tide retreats a long way, which suits kitesurfers more than swimmers. We match the beach to how you actually want to spend your days.
A guided walk takes in the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, the Anglican cathedral built over the former slave market, and the carved doors of the merchant houses. Finish at the Forodhani night market for grilled seafood.
