Every year around 1.5 million wildebeest, 250,000 zebra and hundreds of thousands of gazelle move clockwise through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem chasing rain and new grass. Lion, hyena, cheetah and Nile crocodile move with them. Because the herds are never in one place for long, the single most important decision on a migration safari is which sector of the Serengeti you sleep in — and that is what we plan around your travel dates.

December – March: calving in the south

The herds spread across the short-grass plains of Ndutu and the southern Serengeti, where roughly 8,000 calves are born every day in February. Predator action is at its most intense of the entire year, and the open plains make it easy to watch a cheetah hunt from start to finish.

April – May: the long rains

The columns begin moving north-west through the central Serengeti. It is green, dramatic and by far the quietest and cheapest time to travel — some roads are muddy, but a good guide and a proper 4x4 turn this into the connoisseur's season.

June – July: Grumeti river crossings

The herds funnel through the Western Corridor and cross the Grumeti River, where enormous crocodiles wait. Far fewer vehicles here than in the north, and the light along the riverine forest is superb for photography.

July – October: the Mara River

The famous crossings happen in the Kogatende and Lamai sectors of the northern Serengeti. Crossings cannot be scheduled — we stay three or more nights in the north so you have several chances, and our guides read the herd behaviour along the river each morning.

How we plan your migration safari

We check the current herd positions before quoting, book camps in the right sector rather than the most convenient one, and build in full days so you are not driving during prime wildlife hours. Mobile camps that move with the migration are our favourite option for July to October.
